What caused the contamination at U.S. Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune?
Leaking underground storage tanks, spills and drum disposal caused contamination. Contamination was also caused by solvent-disposal practices at ABC One-Hour Cleaners.
What chemicals were involved in the contamination at Lejeune?
Tests from routine water sampling helped to identify that the chemicals trichloroethylene (TCE) and tetrachloroethylene (PCE) contaminated some drinking water sources at Camp Lejeune. TCE and PCE are colorless, manufactured chemicals. TCE is a solvent used for cleaning metal parts. PCE is used for dry cleaning and metal degreasing. TCE and PCE were the most prominent chemicals in the water, but many others were also discovered.
